Project: We Still Need You

Location: Cheshire East (Macclesfield, Crewe, Wilmslow, Congleton)

Duration: 1.5 years (June 2025 – Dec 2026)

Time Commitment: 1 day per week

Rate: £100 per day (Freelance or sessional)

About the Project

We Still Need You is an innovative new project led by Mentell, focused on reducing loneliness, isolation and suicide risk among male veterans in Cheshire East. The project empowers veterans to give back by becoming trained facilitators of peer support groups—helping men talk, free from advice or judgment.

About the Role

We are looking for inspiring, reliable, and community-minded Veteran Community Champions to help us build connections with ex-service men and raise awareness of Mentell’s unique talking spaces. This is not a clinical or advice-giving role. It’s about being a connector—building bridges between Mentell and the veteran community through lived experience, trust, and authentic conversations. You’ll be part of a small, supportive team of ex-military men working across Cheshire East, with full training, supervision and mentoring provided by Mentell.

Key Responsibilities

• Reach out and engage veterans through local community spaces, events, and networks.

• Promote the message: 'We Still Need You'—inspiring veterans to give back by supporting other men.

• Attend training workshops and retreats to build facilitation and peer support skills.

• Signpost veterans to Mentell’s talking groups and explain the 'no advice, no judgment' model.

• Help set up and sustain local veteran pathways into Mentell groups.

• Attend regular mentoring/supervision calls with the Mentell team.

• Support storytelling and feedback collection (e.g. testimonials, case studies).

Person Specification

Essential:

• Lived experience of serving in the Armed Forces.

• Passionate about men’s mental health and suicide prevention.

• Comfortable speaking to individuals and small groups in the community.

• Reliable, organised and self-motivated.

• Good listener with a non-judgemental attitude.

• Resides in Cheshire East or can travel locally.

Desirable:

• Previous involvement in peer support or group facilitation.

• Personal experience attending Mentell or similar talking spaces.

• Familiar with local veteran organisations or community groups.

• Comfortable sharing personal story (where appropriate) to encourage others.

What We Offer

• A meaningful opportunity to serve again—this time in your community.

• Ongoing training and mentoring from experienced facilitators.

• Invitation to retreats and community events.

• The chance to shape a pioneering veterans’ project from the ground up.

• Flexibility to fit around other commitments (1 day/week average).
